Optima’s visit to Husk Power Systems in India

Who is Husk Power Systems?

Husk Power Systems (HPS) is a company situated in Patna, state of Bihar, India. They generate and distribute electricity by using discarded rice husk to run their 100% biomass power plants.

Husk Power University’s role

Husk Power University (HPU) is a division of HPS, run independently from HPS through a foundation called ‘Samta Samriddhi’ and has already trained more than 100 technical staff that became employees of HPS. HPU has the technical expertise required to operate the plants, but, requires experience and expertise to establish a world class vocational education institution. For this reason HPU, through the Shell Foundation , approached Optima to support HPU in this regard.

Optima’s contribution

In April 2011 Johan and Michael visited HPS in Patna to draft an action plan to highlight the main activities, processes, systems, etc. to be considered in establishing and managing HPU; and also to serve as a discussion document for establishing a scalable vocational education institution.

This action plan will be implemented during the next months and Optima will assist in designing and implementing the training material, processes and systems for HPU.

The way forward

Between now and December 2012 HPS plans to install:
  • Approximately 440 more power plants, and
  • Another 1 514 power plants by December 2014.
This will create:
  • More than 7 000 jobs; and
  • Learning opportunities for more than 12 000 people.

In order to cater for this huge training demand HPS has established HPU. This institution will, recruit and train thousands of skilled technicians, managers and entrepreneurs by 2014.

HPU will set a new standard in vocational education in the country through the use of world-class instructional tools and methods. HPU will use simulated experiential training to drastically reduce the time for an unskilled or semi-skilled trainee to become fully skilled in specific technical trades.

We’ll keep you informed on the progress of this ground breaking project!
